Dr. Japhet Biegon

Dr. Japhet Biegon is the Africa Regional Advocacy Coordinator at Amnesty International. He leads and coordinates the organization’s engagement with African Union organs and institutions. Prior to joining Amnesty International, he was the Director of Investigations at the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). From 2011 to 2013, he was the Director of Research at the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) where he coordinated and supervised the compilation of the Commission’s report. An advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Japhet sits on the Advisory Board of the ESCR Human Rights Law Implementation Project (HRLIP), a collaborative project between four academic human rights centres (Bristol, Essex, Middlesex, and Pretoria) and the Open Society Justice Initiative.
He is also a member of the Kenya National Committee for the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity. He has consulted for a wide range of international organizations and civil society organizations. He has published extensively on diverse human rights issues. His publications include edited books, book chapters, and peer-reviewed journal articles. He holds a Doctor of Laws Degree in Human Rights from the University of Pretoria.
